Mei-Ling McNamara is an investigative journalist, documentary filmmaker and assistant professor at the University of Galway.
Mei-Ling McNamara is a multimedia investigative journalist, documentary filmmaker and assistant professor in journalism, where she focuses on human rights, environmental issues and institutional corruption. She has worked for The New York Times, the Guardian, Al Jazeera English and CNN International among others. Dr. McNamara’s investigative work for the Guardian and Al-Jazeera English has received numerous awards for its in-depth coverage of human trafficking, labour exploitation and modern-day slavery. She was also a reporter and presenter on the multiple award-winning environmental show, Earthrise, with Al Jazeera English. Some of her academic work has appeared in Electronic News, Global Perspectives on Human Rights and the Oxford Human Rights Law Journal, among others. Dr. McNamara holds a PhD in Trans-Disciplinary Documentary Film at the University of Edinburgh, an MA in Journalism from Goldsmiths, University of London, an MA in American Poetry and Prose from the University of Essex, and a BA in English from the University of California, Davis. Before coming to the University of Galway, she lived and worked in Africa, the UK and the US and has held memberships and runs mentorships with Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE), the Society of Professional Journalists and the Foreign Press Association.
