Artistic Intelligence transcends the artificial versus natural dichotomy by expanding knowledge generation beyond cognitive approaches alone. It works with and against human capacities, systems and media at the limits of possibility. Rooted in 20th-century European avant-garde movements, Artistic Intelligence explores how thought functions in complex, material settings free from rational, aesthetic or moral constraints. It draws from artists’ extensive experience across disciplines employing experimental techniques to examine sources of innovation, inspiration and invention within institutional critique frameworks. This approach has democratized knowledge creation, making it accessible beyond culturally privileged elites and enabling stronger connections between artistic practice and collective unconscious. Artistic Intelligence represents artistic practice and research capacity to generate value and impact beyond singular work outcomes. This requires an integrated cognitive framework sensitive to distributed, shifting agencies yet grounded in data, information and knowledge. Artistic Intelligence relies on critically reflecting relationships between research projects, arts practices and knowledge communities—often overlooked by conventional technology developments despite their substantial value for societal transformations. Without R&D capacities built on Artistic Intelligence, the cultural and creative sectors and industries will not be able to harness the unique qualities of artistic research and advanced practices. Further investigated in the COST Action of the same title, Artistic Intelligence delineates radical innovation in maximizing society's capacity to recognize and realize value propositions across all forms of knowledge production through the arts.
