Notice some unusual networks at the top of the list? While a presence on mainstream social media is pretty much mandatory to maintain an ongoing dialogue and build community, PACESETTERS wants to do things a little differently. The path to a sustainable society is inextricably linked to open source. Imagine a carpenter who doesn't know how to make a hammer. What would he do if climate change made it impossible for him to contact the hammer manufacturer? His only hope would be to find a way to make hammers himself or within his local community. With open source, the knowledge of how a tool is made is implicit; it allows the user of the tool to inspect how the tool is made and make their own. Fortunately, most people have some idea of how a hammer is made. Even if they are not blacksmiths. But the same principle should apply to our digital tools: not everyone is a coder. But every community has a coder.
But open source doesn't just provide tools. It also creates networks. The Fediverse (a portmanteau of "federation" and "universe" with a big spoonful of diversity) is one such network, based on the principles of self-hosted, self-managed communication channels and open data. Sounds complicated? Imagine you could follow an X user from your Instagram account and reply to their latest post. You probably already use technology like this in your everyday life. For example, when you log into your Gmail to write a love letter to someone using Outlook. This type of network is called a "federated" network.

There are currently two PACESETTERS outlets on the fediverse,
- a video channel: https://tv.dyne.org/a/pacesetters.eu/videos (Peertube) and
- a group: https://fed.dyne.org/c/pacesetters (Lemmy).
If you want to be a part of this network, you can create an account on one of the tens of thousands of servers available. Each server has its own rules and netiquette, so choose wisely! But don't worry, you can always move your account to another server if you want to.
If you already have an account on the fediverse, simply paste the URL of these profiles into the search box of your instance to follow the account. You can post to the group by mentioning @pacesetters@fed.dyne.org at the bottom of your post. The first line will be the title of the post. You can comment and like videos by pasting the URL of the video into your instance search box.
